Siemens Mobility wanted to bring several divisions together in a new London HQ. Moving from two buildings into one, and then further reducing the office space to occupy a single floor of Euston’s Lantern building.

It was essential to design a workplace that would encourage collaboration. Our consultancy, design and build teams created an inspiring and welcoming environment with an emphasis on natural materials.

On track for a new way of working

As a major player in the rail industry, Siemens Mobility needed a new, downsized London HQ that would reflect its status on the global stage while encouraging collaboration and connection in its hybrid workforce.

The new space, in Euston’s Lantern Building, also had to meet the requirements of different working patterns, providing desk space, privacy pods, meeting rooms and social areas.

Listen. Strategise. Implement

The first stage in our process was to gain an in-depth understanding of the requirements of the new HQ. We ran engagement sessions with the senior leadership team to explore how the office space would be used, keeping a firm eye on the key objectives.

One of the biggest issues raised was whether the requirements could be met across just one floor rather than two given the considerable downsize. Via interviews with the team, workshop sessions and strategic modelling, we were able to demonstrate how and why one floor could effectively align with their aim to adopt a ‘one-team’ approach.

Our team were also able to bring learnings from creating Siemens’ new, vibrant Manchester office to the design for The Lantern. We proposed a similar, human-centred aesthetic incorporating a calming colour palette, natural materials and biophilic design principles.

A space designed to encourage productivity and connection

Reflecting the green credentials of The Lantern building as well as Siemens’ own sustainability goals, the new-look HQ features natural materials and light-filled spaces designed to boost well-being and productivity. The terrace running alongside the entire length of the office space is fully integrated with the working areas, to encourage staff to move effortlessly between indoors and out.

The open-plan office space is perfectly suited to today’s agile ways of working, featuring a mix of private workspaces, adaptable meeting rooms and welcoming breakout zones with pops of colour and greenery.

It’s great to see what we can achieve collectively to create a huge difference in an organisation that has previously approached workplace design in quite a traditional way. We’ve dramatically changed the look and feel of the space to embrace colour and texture and bring Siemens into the 21st century, but in a way that still feels true to the brand.
